National Club Championship

The ICU will hold the Irish National Club Championships 2016 on April 23rd and 24th in the Red Cow Hotel in Dublin. It is hoped that the number of entries will be up this year as the rules now allow for teams with an average rating of 1450 to play.

The rule changes also prevent clubs from importing strong players to represent them unless they have played in this season’s league matches at least 3 times. Clubs should also note that changes to the Munster Chess Union rules completely rule out Munster clubs from importing strong players, as guest players in this year’s MCU leagues cannot play on boards 1 or 2 and the 200 point tolerance rule limits the strength of guest players also.

All this means that this year’s NCC will be a competition between Irish Clubs with the players that represent them in the leagues playing for them. We’d like to see a return to the type of entry we saw in 2011 when 14 teams played in the event.
