Ireland -v- Wales Junior Match 2003

by Johanna Lowry O'Reilly (March 2003)

A group of Irish junior players travelled to Wales on Friday 28 February to play u/16 and u/12 Welsh teams.

The fixture was played in Bridgend (approximately half an hour from Cardiff) in the Heronston Hotel, where the Irish teams also stayed. The hotel was ideal as it was well appointed with a leisure centre, and gym. It also boasted an outdoor pool but the weather was not conducive to trying it out!

The Irish u/16 team was outranked in the top boards, whilst the u/12s proved stronger overall than their Welsh opponents.

At the end of the four round match, a draw was declared, with each country gaining 20 points.

Irish u/16 team: John McMorrow (Captain), Eamon Keane, Hannah Lowry O’Reilly, David McCarthy, Cian Fogarty, Jonathan Wyse

Irish u/12 team: Dara Murphy, Oisin Benson, Ben Quigley, Petie Collum

Petie Collum scored a perfect 4/4.
