The chess component of the Community Games was held in Athlone on the weekend of 16/17 August. It turned out to be a great result for Connaught, as the U16 tournament was won by Claregalway (pictured on the left) and the U12 by an all-girl team (pictured on the right) from Roscommon. More pictures. Is this the first time that the winner(s) of an open chess event in Ireland have not included any men or boys at all? It looks as if the future of chess in Connaught, both boys and girls, is very promising.
