The ICU Committee

The ICU International Selections Committee (ISC) shall make their selections shortly after the official rating lists are published for April - ie from the ICU & FIDE rating lists that are available on April 1st, 2024. As this announcement is slightly late, games from March 1, 2022 to March 31 2024 shall be counted toward the game criteria in below selections. It shall be their goal to select the strongest possible teams based on the criteria below.

Player selection for all upcoming events as required by the ICU Executive will follow existing guidelines published on this website, comprising:

Eligibility Criteria

Selections will be made using the April published ratings versions of the Simple Weighted Average Ratings. This means that all events up to the end of March will be included for selection purposes provided they were submitted for rating in time.

Only current ICU members as listed here and here shall be deemed eligible for consideration.

It is the right of the ISC to reverse the order of any players whose ratings on the above list are within 25 points of each other.

The ISC shall submit a short selection report to the ICU Executive within 21 days of the publication of the April Rating list. Once the ICU Executive approves the selections, qualifying candidates for each event will be notified by the secretary or chairperson of the ISC and the selection report will be published on this site.

Captains and Head of Delegation:

The ICU invites applications for the positions of Open and Women's team captains for the forthcoming 2024 Chess Olympiad to be held in Budapest, Hungary. The dates of the event are September 10-23 2024. The Olympiad organizers provide free board and lodging, and the ICU will pay a contribution towards the flights that will cover most if not all of the cost.

Successful candidates should have a valid passport with which to travel, a keen interest in, and some experience of international chess, good communication skills and familiarity with the FIDE laws of chess and general regulations. Some expertise or knowledge of modern chess preparation methods and programs such as Chessbase would be a bonus.

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria and should keep this criteria in mind when making their application. This criteria will be indicative only - but should provide the ISC with a reasonable measure to judge candidates. Successful candidates will be required to obtain a FIDE TRG license prior to the event.

The closing date to submit your interest in captaining either team via email to [email protected] will be March 15th, 2024. This email, [email protected], will go to: the ICU Chairperson, the ICU Secretary, the ISC in full and the liaison between the ICU and the ISC.

After a consultation period with the selected players, the ISC will make their recommendations to the Executive Committee and on approval, candidates will be notified by the secretary of the ISC.

No canvassing for players or captains shall be permitted beyond the application to the ISC.
