Limerick Open 2007

Jamie Flynn

The Limerick Open took place this year in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel in Castletroy, Limerick. On Saturday, October 27th, 62 players began to battle it out for the €1,000 first prize. After three long days of gambits, sacs and blunders, Grandmaster Alexander Baburin emerged victorious.

Needing just a half-point to secure victory, Baburin agreed a quick draw with Rory Quinn in round six. This meant Baburin finished in first, with 5.5/6, and Rory Quinn and Alex Lopez shared second place with 5/6.

Winning the prize for best under-1800 was Philip Foenander. Philip had a highly successful tournament finishing on 4/6. Philip also won the bounty prize when he defeated Philip Hogarty in Round 2.

Winning the prize for best under-1200 was Ashley Campion. Ashley finished on 3/6.

In the end, the event was enjoyed by all. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the Limerick Open, and hopefully we’ll see you all back next year.

I’d also like to thank everyone on the organising committee, especially Kevin O’Flaherty, Paul O’Flaherty and Gerry Graham.
