This obituary appeared in the Irish Independent, 9th October 1939.

Mr Thomas Cox (27) who has died was an outstanding figure in Irish chess circles. He held the Leinster title in 1936-38 but did not defend it this year. In 1937 he became Irish champion, and also held that honour the following following year. He won the Captain Prior Wandsworth Cup and Gold Medal in 1936 and 1937 and was dual club champion the same years.

He won the first class International Tournament at Nottingham in 1936. This year he was selected on the Irish team for the 1939 Olympiad in Buenos Aries but was unable to accept the invitation owing to ill health. He was Chess Correspondent for the Irish Independent.
