FIDE Senior tournaments 2017

Tim Harding

Dear all,

I see that some minimal information (PDF in various languages) about the World Seniors Individual Championships (50+ and 65+) is available for download at:

https://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/10055-world-senior-championship-2017.html

The venue is Acqui Terme, Italy, north of Genoa, and the dates (including travel dates) are 6-19 November.

It looks much the same as two years ago, when four of us played, but I have not compared the prices.

The details of the EU Senior individual championships have just been released at: http://www.europechess.org/european-senior-chess-championship-2017-regulations/

They are still trying to drum up entries for the EU Senior Teams (Novi Sad, Serbia in June) which in my opinion is not a very attractive event this year.

I hope we can get teams together next year for both the 50+ and 65+ World and maybe European Senior teams for which the dates and venues will be:

EUROPEAN: 13-23 April 2018 Walbrzych, Poland

WORLDS: 30 June-8 July Radebeul, Dresden, Germany [the same excellent venue as last year's very successful event]

Finally a reminder of eligibility rules. Players entering these events must have reached the qualifying age not later than 31 December in the year in question, i.e. you might not actually have reached your birthday when the event is held.

The relevant years are 1967 for 50+ events this year (1968 for events being held next year) and 1952 for 65+ events this year (1953 for next year).

Players over 65 are eligible to play on 50+ teams of course and in fact last year there were some players in their seventies (notably former FIDE president, GM Fridrik Olafsson) who did so.

If Alex Baburin would play we could have a pretty useful 50+ team next year! Only a few elite teams last year had a grandmaster.

Below the top two boards in the top matches there isn't actually a huge difference in the playing strength required between the two age groups.

It's more important to be physically fit (for potentially 4-5 hour long games) and still following chess developments and playing reasonably regularly.

Also it is possible for more than one team from a federation to be entered in these competitions.

I hope this is all helpful.

Best wishes Tim
