2006 Mulcahy Cup

UCC student Alex Lopez won the 2006 Mulcahy Cup on a tie-break from English International Master Gawain Jones. That makes it the third successive year Alex has dominated this event, a record breaking achievement. For the 2nd time the UCC player won ahead of an International Grandmaster.

The weekend tournament took place from 20th to 22nd January at the illustrious Devere Hall.

The Bank of Ireland sponsored event was opened on the Friday night by the Chairman of UCC Chess Club, DJ O'Donoghue. The overall standard of competition was exceptionally high with 52 competitors coming from all over Ireland.

Other players finishing well were Semyon Mkrchyan, Paul Kiely and Rory Quinn on joint 3rd, while Stephen Short, International UCC student Thomas Beck, David O Mahony, John Prince and Hugh Doyle won grading prizes.
