Irish Championships: Venue change and Supporting Events

John McMorrow

Unfortunately, we have been forced to move The Irish Championship 2017 sponsored by Clare County Council from its originally stated venue in the Savoy Hotel in Limerick to the West County Hotel in Ennis. The Savoy Hotel informed us that they will be undergoing renovations during the time of the event and have therefore had to take our reservation off their books which they have put down to a disconnect between managements and staff. They have extended their apologies to anyone affected.

Fortunately, we had prepared two options for this year's event and so have reverted to hosting the event in the West County Hotel in Ennis which may be familiar to members if they've ever played in The Ennis Congress.

We have also just published details of the supporting events which will be held on the weekends either side of the main week-long event. The Irish Championships 2017: First Weekend sponsored by Ei Electronics will feature 2 weekenders: an under 1300 FIDE rated event (The Challenger) and a 1200-1900 FIDE rated event (The Major). The Irish Championships 2017: Open Weekender by Clare County Council will run on the second weekend and finish alongside the week-long event on Sunday 6th, August. To date, the confirmed entrants for the main event are GM Alexander Baburin, IM Alex Lopez, FM Colm Daly and Killian Delaney.

A range of accommodation options are available in Ennis and we have prepared a list of these which can be seen on the event flyer here. If you are looking to share a room or house for any of the events and are in need of others to split the cost - please get in touch with us and we will do our best to find you a match.
