The ICU International Selections Committee (ISC) for the 2017-18 period is comprised of Stephen Brady, Mel O'Cinneide, Jonathan O'Connor, & Andrew Kildea (Rating Officer). They shall make their selections shortly after the official February rating list is published on this site on March 1st - as per the 2017 ICU AGM which stipulates that selections should take place on this date unless otherwise stated.

Player selection for all upcoming events as required by the ICU Executive will follow existing guidelines published on this website, comprising:

Eligibility Criteria

Selections will be made using the February published ratings versions of the Simple Weighted Average Ratings. This means that all events up to the end of February will be included for selection purposes.

Only current ICU members as listed here and here shall be deemed eligible for consideration.

It is the right of the ISC to reverse the order of any players whose ratings on the above list are within 25 points of each other.

The ISC shall submit a short selection report to the ICU Executive within 21 days of the publication of the February Rating list. Once the ICU Executive approves the selections, qualifying candidates for each event will be notified by the secretary or chairperson of the ISC and the selection report will be published on this site.

Captains and Head of Delegation:

The ICU invites applications for the positions of Open and Women'’s team captains for the forthcoming 2018 Chess Olympiad to be held in Batumi, Georgia. The dates of the event are September 23rd to October 7th 2018. The Olympiad organizers provide free board and lodging, and the ICU will pay a contribution towards the flights that will cover most if not all of the cost.

Successful candidates should have a valid passport with which to travel, a keen interest in, and some experience of international chess, good communication skills and familiarity with the FIDE laws of chess and general regulations. Some expertise or knowledge of modern chess preparation methods and programs such as Chessbase would be a bonus.

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria and should keep this criteria in mind when making their application. Successful candidates will be required to obtain a FIDE TRG licence prior to the event.

The closing date to submit your interest in captaining either team will be February 27th, 2018. Please email the ICU secretary ([email protected]) & ICU chairperson ([email protected]) if you are interested.

After a consultation period with the selected players, the ISC will make their recommendations to the Executive Committee and on approval, candidates will be notified by the secretary of the ISC.
