The executive have been aware for some time now how difficult it is to manage all the invitations we get for both domestic and international events. Often invitations are given to the few players who knew about the event and asked an executive member for them. Worse still, there were events that we sent nobody to, even when there may have been members who would have liked to play. Even when people are selected, these decisions are often made very late in the day, when flights are more expensive, and accommodation may be difficult to come by.

European Team championships 02 November 2011-12 November 2011

To be held in Porto Carras, Greece from 2 November until 12 November. The event comprises a men’s team of 5 players. Players pay for their own transport and accommodation costs. Full board, double room costs 66€/day. Full board, single room costs 89€/day.

ICU Support

ICU pays the team entry fee to the ECU. This is 70€ per player.

Selection Criteria

The players will be chosen by WAR, according to the selection committee.

As not enough people applied to form a team, no team can be sent.

World Senior Chess Championships 14 November 2011-27 November 2011

This event will take place in Opatija, Croatia between the 14th and 27th November 2011. It is open to all players representing FIDE Chess Federations, regardless of their title or rating, providing that the male tournament participants were born in 1951 or before, and that the female tournament participants were born in 1961 or before. There is no limit to the number of participants per federation. Registration can be made by the individual and / or National Federation.

ICU Support

ICU pay entry fee of 140€ per entrant

Selection Criteria

It is understood that participants nominated by their respective Federations will receive reduced accommodation rates from the organisers, and it is therefore recommended that the 2011 / current Irish Senior Champion receives the ICU’s nomination. To date Melvyn King has expressed an interest in participating. Any further candidates should notify the ICU Executive of their intension to participate prior to the registration date.

U10 World Youth Chess Championships 17 November 2011-27 November 2011

This event will take place in Caldas Novas-Goias, Brazil between the 17th and 27th November 2011. There is a place for 1 boy and 1 girl.

Entry fee will be paid

Selection Criteria

Ratings have been based on the ICU website published “Top Juniors Table”. The selections for the European Youth Chess Championship and the World Youth Chess Championship are the same, with the same age categories and allowance of 1 boy and 1 girl for each of the categories. The ICU selection criteria for these events is that the highest rated player wishing to play in each category is offered the first choice of participation in one of the events, with the position in the other event offered to the next highest rated player on the list.

U12 World Youth Chess Championships 17 November 2011-27 August 2011
